Essendon ruck woes was given a slight fillup as Patrick Ryder beat his striking charge at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.
The AFL Match Review Panel offered the Bombers only available ruckman a one-match ban for rough conduct against Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield and the club risked a two-week suspension if last night’s AFL Tribunal challenge failed.
“My intention was to lay a shepherd, just run in with my arm and (hit) his arm and shoulder,” Ryder said.
Essendon’s football operations manager Paul Hamilton said the club was confident of beating the charge.
“We’re a bit low on rucks at the moment, as you saw on the weekend, but we’re really pleased with the decision and believe Patty Ryder’s a very fair player and he has been his whole career.
“We were confident going in because we believed his action was reasonable, we knew what his intent was and … whilst it was considered a risk because it would have been two weeks without a ruckman of any sort, we didn’t think it was, in the overall scheme of things.”
